Picture with text overlay

Hi,

Forgive me if this has been covered in another thread but I have been searching for a long time and still not found anything.

I would like to place text over a Picture and be able to postion it precisely.

I have tried using text in element option and putting text as part of the picture but these all look poor on certain browsers and devices.

I would like to separate the text so it is nice and crisp on all devices and browsers.

The NOF so-called "optimization" of images seems to do more harm than good, and if you are referring to using the Image Properties Panel to overlay text, the same "optimization" may be occurring.

You could, in your graphic editing program of choice, simply combine the text into the image.

The easy way in NOF is to use your image as a background to an element, say a single celled table or even a layout region. Then you can place whatever you want in the cell or layout region.

The hard way is to switch from publishing as HTML 4.01 with Tables to simply HTML 4.01 in which case there are no rules on overlapping elements. You have to be a little more careful with the layout of rest of your site, however.

The sneaky way is to create a small layout region as a element, and set just that layout region to publish as HTML 4.01. You can break all the rules within that layout region, but the rest of your site is unaffected.

One question, four answers. How's that? :)

Draw up a layout region (in your tool bar), layout region properties > second tab: background > insert your picture there.
And then you write your text (with the text tool) in this layout region anywhere you want and shift it into the proper position.

Unless you're dynamically changing the text do it in photoshop. (I know, Ray's already said that but I said it simpler :-))

Thanks for the quick replies and suggestions. I had previously combined text with images but these look poor on the ipad when people zoom in.

I have gone with the Layout region with background image and these look good so far, just need to test on different devices.

Hi,

NOF does have a built-in tool to add text to an image (actually, it is one of the tabs in de image property dialog). Text can be shifted in all directions, choose a font you like, etc. It's very convenient for me, so far. Though I have to admit that for longer texts or more sophisticated text layouts it isn't that suitable.
Why don't you use this option?

Optimize a graphic before you add text to it. Then you can use it in other
places with differing text in each place if you want to. And resize images
to screen size before Inserting them. NOF's resizing does not change the
file size, only its display size.
When you have few colors in an image, also consider .PNG for small file
sizes.

PaintShop is much better (and cheaper) for website image work. Up t o PSP
X2, that is, if you happen to be running XP Pro. X3 and above seem to be OK
on Win7 and above.
