NOF9 Freezing While Uploading Files

I have found that NOF9 freezes while uploading a linked pdf file of 20MB.
I can upload the file to the site using an FTP client so I don't think it
is a restriction put in place by the host.

It happens when the page the file is linked from is updated and NOF9 wants
to upload the file again, even though it hasn't changed (I have ticked
'Only changed items').

Anybody come across this? I have changed the site layout for now to avoid
it happening so often but it is a PITA!

Jeff,

It has always been "best practice" where NOF and large files of any sort
are concerned to just upload them with an external FTP program and link to
them in NOF.

The new V11 FTP client seems to be the best yet, but prior versions were
less than optimal.

Plus uploading externally and linking to the files gets you around the
whole issue of times when you'd like to do a "Publish All" in your site and
don't want to wait for lots of big files to be needlessly uploaded again by
NOF.

I am trying to get into the habit of publishing locally and using an FTP
app to upload from the local copy.

A lot of folks do that (especially with external files such as PDF or
photos, etc).

Sometimes it is just easier to manage "outside".

Why "best practice"?

I upload large projects with the NOF-built in FTP-client since version 2
on a daily basis. But I had to change providers for that - about 10
years ago. It seems it is depended on the configuration or operating
system of the server.

I would see uploading "manually" from an external FTP-client as very
tedious.

Large projects (ones with tons of images and especially ones with lots of
large files like the 20 MB PDF's mentioned), are more apt to give problems
when publishing with NOF - especially if your not on a fast upload link.

Not everyone has 768K DSL upload, so telling NOF to "Publish All" with a
large project can take HOURS (I had one in my early days take 11 hours to
upload).

The only way around it was to select the page you were working on and
publish all for that page only.

Unfortunately if you changed the site navigation (added pages) you usually
had to publish all for the site - and you were in for a long FTP torture
session.

If you upload these large files externally and simply link to them, then
the rest of the website can be published in seconds.


As for the publish local and use an external FTP, some seem to have to do
it for success - others do not.

I've had good luck with using the built-in FTP, but I have always kept big
PDF's etc external and I never use the NOF galleries (so my images for
galleries are always external).


But to clarify - the "best practice" comment was about dealing with large
files like PDFs more than anything.

Does that make sense?

of course I publish PDFs externally. - what I wanted to say, not only
big upload jobs, literally everything I ever had to upload,
incrementally or total, went smooth and fast from within NOF since I
changed provider in 1998/99.

Having a good host (and a good ISP) can make a world of difference - that
is for sure!
