I used to do that. With all the forums and newsgroups I follow, it
required way too much maintenance to sort and keep track. Plus, I had no
easy way to skim the contents without opening each file.

Copernic Desktop Search - www.copernic.com - is excellent for searching
instantly anything on your computer saved to files, including PDFs, e-mails,
video and music. I've been using the free version for years with no problem.
