Thread: Internet Explorer Script Errors

    Default Internet Explorer Script Errors

    When I "Preview" my home page in Page View I get errors. What do these mean and how do I fix it?

    Here is an example of one:
    An error has occured in the script on this page
    Line 1
    Character 1
    Invalid Character
    file:///C:/Program%20Files/NetObjects/NetObjects%20Fusion%2011.0/NetObjects%20System/Resources/js/external/jquery/jquery.js "

    Also, when you view my home page online www.JGDevelopment.com it lists Error on Page at the bottom left of the screen.

    In all of my life I have never seen a page with that much javascript on it. Fully 3/4 of the page content is script functions.

    The error is in your index.js file (there is probably a conflict between a declaration in that file and with one of the many scripts you are using).

    The easiest way to find the error is to start removing some of the scripts and see where the problem is located until the error goes away, then put them back in one at a time to see which ones conflict.

    This isn't answering your question, but ... Ouch!

    Visually, the design is quite attractive, but your background image is, essentially, that entire design.

    This really need to be busted up into all the usual elements.

    Doing so will provide far more flexibility later on as the site evolves.

    Firefox Web Developer Toolbar reports the following error:

    Error: missing ) after argument list
    Source File: http://www.jgdevelopment.com/index.js
    Line: 6, Column: 112
    Source Code:
    $('#Text179Link3').bind('click', function() {
    pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/javascriptpenpopup_7f33('www.nationalconstructioninc.com')') ;
    } );

    ....but really, why use javascript? You'll probably annoy many of those
    who have it switched on by opening new windows all over the place, and
    key pages will be inaccessible to anyone with it switched off.

    I'd also suggest not underlining any text - the convention is that only
    links should be underlined.

    A good tool for debugging anything like this is to check your published
    page with the online HTML validator at:

    http://validator.w3.org/

    You just go there and enter the URL of the page you want to check.

    Your page produces errors that indicate that the browser can not figure out
    how to parse the page, or what the DOCTYPE is.

    The next step for you is to do a VIEW SOURCE of the published page in IE.

    When you look at that, you see that the very first line in the page is NOT
    the <DOCTYPE> tag.

    Your page starts out with this:

    <!-- Page Start-of-File Script --><TITLE> Builder Madison | Home Builder
    Madison | Remodelers Madison, WI | Remodeling Contractors Madison |Log Home
    Builders Wisconsin | Timber Frame Builder Wisconsin </TITLE>

    This is all content that would go INBETWEEN the <head> tag set of the page.

    It looks like you have either post edited the page and gotten things
    misplaced, or you inserted them into the NOF page at the wrong entry
    points.

    If you go to www.ezchangelog.com and view the page source (for comparison),
    you will see that the page structure (which DOES pass validation) should
    be:

    <DOCTYPE statement>
    <html>
    <head>
    Header content
    </head>
    <body>
    Body content
    </body>
    </html>

    When you fix where your code and script is being inserted and republish,
    just re-validate the page again and it should help you find any other
    potential errors.

    Does that help?

    Charles

    How do you not use javascript? Sounds dumb, but I didn't know I was.

    No problem - we're here to help.

    You've 2 main options for the links to other pages:

    1) just add the links in the same way as your first link to 'new home
    construction'

    2) if you don't want your visitor leaving your site, then start to add
    the link as above but, towards the bottom left of the 'Link' dialog box,
    select 'Existing' in the 1st drop-down box, then '_blank' in the second
    that will appear alongside. Then click the 'Link' button.

    That should remove the need for a good portion of the script.
