Search functionality is done through 3rd party suppliers. Here are a few you can look at

    http://www.atomz.com/

    http://www.google.com/sitesearch/

    http://www.picosearch.com/

There are many more, just google for site search tool

    Default Thanks

I suspected this would be the case, I came from Frontpage which had a server based search facility. Would anyone know if it is usual for your hosting site to provide this?

A site search is typically an indexed database of your domain content that is searched (not your actual content). There are several 3rd party companies that offer this service. Some for free, some for a monthly cost. It is not something that you will get with your web hosting account. Most hosting accounts still offer frontpage extensions. Microsoft has not supported frontpage since about 2006 so this technology is slowly becoming obsolete.

Setting up a site search involves contracting with the 3rd party search company and having your site walked by their spiders to create the database of your content that is then searched by user input that is sent to their database where it is searched and the results displayed.

The Fusion end of the search is typically creating a single text box and submit button that sends the input box content to the search company along with your account information. All of the actual search is done on their site's database of your content.

Once you find the search provider and establish an account, the rest is rather simple.
