    Default Mobile Site w/ NOF11?

    Hi,

    Wondering if it's possible to create a mobile site with NOF11? I mean, short of having only a text box and Ctrl-T pasting all of the site code into it.

    Silly me, I thought all you needed to do was have a really skinny site and minimize the data. But now I'm reading about:
    • specific doctypes required -- and, of course, the content must be valid for that doctype
    • any use of tables being a Very Bad Idea (hello NOF11)

    Sooo... is it feasible to create a mobile site with NOF.11, and if so, what is required?
    If I just create a skinny layout and select "Semantic XHTML", will that do the trick, or am I oversimplifying?
    Or do I need a different tool, like NOF 12, or "the uspeakable"?
    Or just go with one of those free basic site with hosting options?

    Hi Ray,

    have a look at source code for a standard nof mobile wizard in my link below: HTML4 and tables. They don't even use CSS classes :O

    There is just this meta content bit that is different, your tecnical mind will probably easily solve that one - Let me know if you did!

    Thumbs up

    Thanks, Babs

    I'll have a look.

    It seems odd -- everyone is (virtually) screaming about how everything is going mobile, and if you don't have a mobile site you're a big loser, yet almost no-one here seems to be doing much with mobile sites.

    This site talks about the danger of using tables for formatting, and requiring a specific DOCTYPE, but I've yet to find a comprehensive overview of the requirements....

    I wouldn't expect NetO to be up to date regarding the necessary tecnical standards . It was just a little cosmetic gimmick..

    You are right, it's surprising that the issue of mobile websites is not being raised more often.

    ... I have also tried the new mobile template of NOF

    http://www.tommyherrmanndesign.com/n...ml/mobile.html

    and not much is different from a regular website (it's also tables, but XHTML is probably better). You just should consider the scale of the mobile windows.

    Look at the source code (and try this URL with your mobile phone):

    http://www.tommyherrmanndesign.com/n...dition/Mobile/

    and you will find this.

    Code:
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="content-type" CONTENT="text/html;charset=UTF-8">
    <META CONTENT="width=240; initial-scale=1.25; user-scalable=0;" NAME="viewport">
    Do not use any iframes, this is not working in mobile phone. For the iPhone I have just found this.

    Most smart phones are now capable of viewing a regular web site without
    much difficulty, and personally I don't like being redirected to a
    mobile-specific version. I guess many others think the same, otherwise
    mobile-specific sites would be a big issue.

    The exception might be when you expect the reader to interact with the
    site, rather than just read and navigate it - although you might want to
    consider an app rather than / as well as a mobile site in such cases.

    I'm still trying to get my head around the difference between an "app" and a "mobile site", altough I've got a thread going on this in the Chit Chat section.

    As far as this thread goes, I'm trying to determine if there is any "magic" in creating a mobile friendlly site, and the sense I'm getting is not really. It seems just a matter of not using too many bells & whistles to keep data down and the page narrow. I guess I'll throw a test together and publish it, probably using the Semantic XHTML doctype and see what happens. I imagine for something like this, the technology changes so fast that some rules that were applicable last week may not apply today.

    As far as using sites on mobile is concerned, I use this site page (https://gbapps.net/gbwhatsapp-apk/)as much as possible because there are some versions that allow you to use WhatsApp.
