Website design is one of those things where just about the time you feel
good about putting your feet in the water, you realize that you have no
idea how deep the pool is<g>.

I've been doing it for years and by all respects still consider myself a
rank amateur and a hack.

There are a lot of folks that hang around here that know a lot more than I
do. I'm just more verbose than some of them since NOF has always been
something that I enjoy.

I'm speaking about Netbboks and Smartphones. I don't have stats right at
hand, but I think this audience is growing fast and I think they cannot
be sharply separated from desktop users.

So 800 px width is a compromise for me.

Like Chuck said I don't think you have to go down to 800 for the
Smartphones. Everyone I know who uses them says they deal with the 1024
width sites just fine.

I do think that segment of the market it growing and given that, the old
common sense theories (such as making sure photos are optimized for the
web, there are not 100 of them on a page, etc.) apply.

This does allow us to produce decent sites that render well and still have
good performance.

Of course you never know when your going to hit one of the bogies<g>.

I ran across a site the other day that had dismal performance on my 10
MB/sec DSL. When I examined the page, I found that each of the thumbnails
(150x100) of which there were far too many on one page were actually 4 MB
images being resized by HTML.

Some folks never learn<G>

resolutions

but I also like clear pages with not too much content.. -

wasn't there an online tool which shows web pages in different resolutions?

Paul,
You've been given some very good info so far. So I'll just add a couple of
things.

If your server doesn't provide meaningful user stats, get Google Analytics
(free to sign up) to determine what res the majority of your site visitors
use. Then build site accordingly and shave off about 30px for browser
chrome.

On fixed-width, centered layouts, I use between 900-1000px because not
everyone keeps their browser viewport maximized.

On liquid sites where there's a lot of info to present, I set a min-width:
900px and a max-width: 1300px to keep the page from looking hideous on
super-wide displays.

I like whitespace too. I think that it is too easy to let clutter make a
site hard to use.

I think there was, but I use a free tiny utility called Sizer.exe

http://www.brianapps.net/sizer.html

It makes it simple to toggle the browser window between different
resolutions and then you know for sure that your seeing what the end user
will see.
