    Default running as admin questions

I have installed NOF12 (and its updates) on a Win7 system, and have NOF
set to run as administrator as suggested here. All good so far. However,
as I am "playing" with sites in order to learn all the changes since
NOF7, I have test sites saved that I want to delete. Before I set NOF to
run as admin, I could simply go to that folder and delete the sites.
When NOF is running as admin, however, it will not let me delete a site.
I've gone back and forth, so that is consistently the reason.

Is there anything I need to do to keep running NOF as admin and still be
able to delete sites I am through "playing" with? Or is the switching
back and forth the only possibility?

    Thanks,
    Dana

I was admin when I installed v12 and I have no problem deleting test sites. I'm a single user and always run as admin. You don't need to keep right clicking and selecting 'Run as Administrator' once you've installed v12. I suspect there's something else happening here. Have you checked your directory permissions for example. I have to confess I'm no Win 7 expert, even though I'm forced to use it. There are others here who know much more about how it operates (or doesn't as the case may be) but I have not come across your particular problem. One thought - are you accessing the sites through Libraries -> Documents -> My Documents -> NetObjects 12 -> User Sites? If so, you should have no problem deleting a site (I've just done it to make sure - I only use this folder to test things; my actual sites are on another drive completely as per my advice below). If you are trying to access My Documents through Documents & Settings in the file tree, then Windows 7 will not let you do it.

One word of advice; NoF (as with all windoze programs) defaults to saving sites in the My Documents folder on the C:\ drive; a windows idiocy that they haven't corrected even though it's been pointed out as idiocy ever since windows came on the market, way back in the '80s. My practice as soon as I get a new computer or reformat one is to partition the hard drive (or install a separate physical drive if possible) and use that for all data, running only OS and applications on the C:\ drive. That way I can reinstall OS without having to worry about backing up and restoring my data, something I have always had to do with monotonous regularity with windows.

My current production computer has six physical drives. Four 500GB drives are arranged in a RAID 0/1 configuration so that the data is striped across two drives for speed and those two drives are mirrored on two more. That's data security. I have an 80GB drive holding the OS and applications and finally an 80GB drive which operates as a photoshop scratch drive. With the price of storage so low these days, this is a very fast, safe and, more importanly, affordable data storage solution.

Thank you for your excellent advice, franko.

I was taking a shortcut and accessing the sites simply through the
Documents folder. Works when not running as admin - but not when NOF is
set to run as admin. I tried your route -- Libraries -> Documents -> My
Documents -> NetObjects 12 -> User Sites -- and I can delete sites even
when NOF is running as Admin. I never would have thought of that -- so I
think you again for your insight.

    Dana...

Just locate and place NOF 12' EXE icon on your Desktop and click to run
    it from there.

On Win 7, 32 or 64bit, admin or not, it all runs the same from the icon,
and you don't NECESSARILY have to set the NOF 12 .EXE to "run as
    administrator".

Why many users go through all kinds of trapeze acts to run NOF 12 on Win
7 is confusing to the vast majority of users that never have a problem
with the executing it and running, direct from a Desktop icon to the NOF
    ..EXE.

I will say that those having these types of strange problems usually
wind up having messed with or have their systems so contorted that it's
a miracle that the OS itself runs properly, much less NOF.

That's the way I was running it, Joe. But in going over the notes I had
saved from here, I saw several advising that running as admin would
prevent problems with various external components or solve problems some
people had had. I usually run my systems and programs with default
settings, and rarely run into any of the problems posted on NGs (only
the ones I cause from my own folly) - but thought this was important.
    Now I am confused :-).

    No confusion needed, Dana.

Yes, one can set the NOF .EXE to run as admin for it's "lifetime" on
your system, and it won't affect anything in a negative manner. Doing so
is really user's prerogative, whether or not technically it is really
    needed.

Where run as admin was a better choice, was in the original installation
or Upgrade of NOF 12 into a system that had or not had a previous NOF
12, 11 or 10 or etc. already installed.

Thanks for the added info, Joe. Guess I would fall into the "original"
intent, as this is a fairly new computer - and new to NOF. I'm still
running my sites on an XP system with NOF7 - so I installed the NOF12
upgrade and its updates on the new Win7 computer -- it's kinda like
    learning a new program :-)
