Thread: Replacing Flash

  1. #1

    Default Replacing Flash

    Hi All,

We have a website with a rotating Flash Banner at www.arrowrocklodge.com

What we are trying to do with this is give site visitors an overview of our establishment, some actual guests (we're told people are more likely to book a place if they see pictures of past guests) and an idea of the rural, scenic and historical nature of the area.

My issue is that I notice through Google Analytics that a significant and growing portion of visitors are using iPads & similar.

I understand that flash does not display on Apple devices and I was recently told it was no-longer being supported on newer Android phones. I also heard it would not be available on the latest Windows based phones.

No doubt we'll have to consider a mobile version of the website soon but in the meantime is there a way to replace our flash banner with a non flash item giving the same effect?

Would an animated gif work across platforms?

    What is best practice?

    Any ideas and suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks

    Craig

    Hi,
I cannot see the rotating banner on your website.....because I'm using my iPad right now.

But here is a long list of jQuery Sliders, they all work perfect with my pad.
    Take your pick.

I'm using a WowSlider show here. Free and easy to implement.

    Anton,
since I know that you speak German, here is a german tutorial for the WOW Slider.
Right at the bottom you will find links for the SwissKnife DocType Component.
Please load it down and use DocType Loose to publish your Wow Slider, this will bring some improvement...

Found this a while ago, a recommendation for universal compatibility:

    Hi Mia,

Thanks for the advice, I've had a look at the lists of jQuery Sliders ..... so many to choose from.

So far I've only tried WowSlider, if you go to www.arrowrocklodge.com/test/ you'll see what you've been missing on your iPad

1st attempt it was OK on Firefox but jiggled left to right on IE, 2nd attempt fixed that so now it's OK on IE, Firefox and Safari but is a bit erratic on Chrome, runs OK through a few cycles then starts to jump between slides.

Otherwise it's exactly as our current flash banner except for the wowslider link in the corner - now my mission is to find a totally free slider.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Craig
