Default SEO - Wordpress vs NOF ?

    HI Folks
I was having a discussion with a company that specialises iN
search engine optimisation the other day.

The client had asked them to look at the SEO aspects of a site
that I'd built in NOF - and they had decided to do a complete 'look &
feel' redesign, and create the new site in Wordpress.

The 'look & feel' I have no problem with - I'd be the first to admit to
being no graphics designer <g> - but I was a bit mystified to hear them
say that their new 'Wordpress' site would be much more search-engine
friendly - just because it was made in Wordpress...

Anybody got any experience of this 'Wordpress Vs NOF' debate in the
    context of search-engine friendliness...??

My take (fwiw !) is that getting the relevant indexable content up
towards the top of the page, and making sure that links exist so that
se's can find all of the site (site map also) is a good start....

    Comments invited.

    Thanks
    Adrian

You hit it on the head.

    #1: concise relevant content

    everything else

current content (page changes between spider walks)
relevant links to and from sites with relevant content
    proper use of <h1-h6> tags
proper use of image alt tags
    relevant page titles

It does not matter whether a site is generated with Fusion or hand coded or
    displayed via a dynamic language.

Content is king. Everything else is just good programming technique

    That's reassuring to hear....

I shall be shot for saying it <g> - but I do get the feeling that
there's a fair few snake-oil merchants in the seo business....

I couldn't see _why_ creating the site in Wordpress would give
such an (alleged) advantage - but it looks as if my client's been
seduced by offers of a vast increase in hits - so good luck to them !

    Thanks for the reassurance <g>

Because they use Wordpress to make entire sites (when it's intended for
doing blogs) and they're SEO "experts".

In other words, they want the business and used their alleged and
self-proclaimed SEO "expert" status to get it.

As Mike said, it's the content, not what you use to design the site.

    Snake oil ?

    That was my understanding ....
....but then, I've only been doing web since 1994 -
and the client's got a shiny new Diploma from an evening course in
Online Marketing (10 weeks - 3 hours each week!) - so what hope do I have??

Said SEO experts are now backing away saying 'we don't do web design' -
but they're quite happy to redesign the site (with added snake-oil)
and then hand it back to me to maintain...

    Don't think so.... somehow

    Next ! <g>

It takes years of consistent performance to get a top ranking. I am sure
that your client was not told this. It takes 6-9 months to even get a
    stable ranking on page 100.....

There is no longer any black magic to search engine ranking. Most of the
hocus pocus is now penalized. If your client was ranked on page 20 before
the "make over" they may find themselves back on page 50 after (depending on
how much BS is gratuitously inserted).

    Website's been operating since September '09 ...
it's for a new transport service, currently getting 29,000 uniques per
month. 40% of visitors come from search engines, 31% from referring
    sites and 28% directop.

Client's worried that the visits aren't converting into bookings
(round about 1,400 bookings in that period with 26% bounce rate) - and
the client seems to have decided that's because the seo isn't right and
the site needs a 'look&feel' makeover....

Depending on the search terms, site ranks between 1st and 8th or
thereabouts in Google's front page ... and siterank gives it 5/10

It'll be interesting to see how the hits go in the next months -
    after the optimisation!

I have a co. that has their site(s) optimized....they email me and tell me
to be careful next time I update their site....So I went though one of their
newly optimized pages line by line....
The original page had 668 lines of code...
The new optimized page had 667 lines of code....the only line of code that
    had been changed/optimized/remover was:
    <meta name="Generator" content="NetObjects Fusion 11 for Windows">

I hope they don't pay "too much" for this service"

This will help y'all understand Google's ranking factors...

    http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/inte...ctors.htm#posi
    tive-on

I've been doing SEO since my IBM days in '97. It's getting harder all
the time, and, as has been said several times here already, if you
concentrate on developing well-written, information-laden, relevant
content and eliminate the things that stand in the way of that (ie
flash web sites) then you will eventually be listed well.

Incidentally, Google loves longevity in web sites. A new site isn't
going to rank well in the organics no matter how well written and
relevant it is. It's for that reason that we always recommend to our
clients to budget for an adwords campaign for at least the first 12 to
    24 months.

    cheers

Me too. And if they're in a very competitive keyword market, maybe longer.

If we're talking about blogs with all things being equal, I have read that
WordPress articles get better recognition from Google than similar articles
on Blogger. Don't know why this is but I find it amusing since Google owns
    Blogger!
