Default Building a Forum into a NOF site

    Hi,

I've just been asked to build a Forum into a NOF site. Never tried this
before and wouldn't know where to start! Any suggestions before I
    attempt to re-invent the wheel?

    Paul,

phpBB is a good forum platform.

You'll find a topic in the Beyond Fusion forums that use it, on adding a
    forum to your site.

You need PHP and a database available on your web server.

There other good forum packages as well - this is the one we use.

The phpbb stuff works fine as a standalone forum that will have an
    exclusive domain name.

I once tried embedding one into a NOF generated site using frames and
had dismal luck with functionality and control.

Since I'm guessing you want your forum to be part and parcel of a larger
web site (including navigation), which was exactly what I'd needed to
    do; I'm suggesting Nabble ( http://www.nabble.com ). It's set up is easy
and is just one Control-T & V away from being a navigable page on your site.

    Here's where I used it: http://www.lha4.com/scuttlebutt.html

Try the From Tools, they are relatively easy and create quick simple forms.

Just a few tips off the top of my head..

Put the Form Manager on a separate page and make that page "no nav."

Set the .csv file on the server to read and write all with "CHMOD 777
    filename.csv"

Fill in the blanks, try it out on a test site first..

    Chuck, Andy,

    - Many thanks. All good stuff there. I did a bit of research using
http://mashable.com/2007/08/19/online-forums/ and checked out most of
them. My preferred option were phpBB and SimpleMachines but I suspect I
may run in to problems at the server end...plus it's another database
project...yuk. I've emailed my ISP with both of these requirements so
    I'll see what they say.

Looking at the ready made options - to call in with the trusty iFrame -
I found several but all my tests ended up too wide for the final NOF
page, except one but it was sooooooooooo ugly and had loads of ads
And then I get to Andy's Nabble option. That looks worth investigating,
,so I'll get back to you on that.....and it looks every easy!!

    SteveH

    - you need to rest a while <g>. Take the rest of the day off and
lie down for a bit, lol.

    Great help guys...as usual!

    Paul

My preference is Simple Machines Forum. I like the v2.0 RC2, works well
with new menus easy to install with some experience of server side scripts.

    See links here
    http://www.simplemachines.org/commun...topic=145838.0 for
    installation with CSS
I didn't understand enough to get this to work so used
