Default language website based on origin visitor

Is there a way to automatically direct visitors of my website to the
pages in english or the pages in my native language (dutch)?

How would you tell what language the visitor speaks in order to direct them?

Many multi language sites have simple flags that users can click on to go to
    pages in their language

Maybe based on their ip address? However that probably needs a database?
Maybe I am thinking just too complicated.

Even with an IP database, these can be affected by Proxies etc. giving
    misleading locations anyway.

I would do what Mike said and just have a pull down box or graphics to
    select a language.

present them with a choice screen the first time they visit then set a
cookie storing their selected preference. That way you can direct them
to the correct site from then on (providing they accept and don't delete
the cookie). Explain on the gateway page the reason you're setting the
cookie so the more knowledgeable won't delete it.

    cheers
