NOF : Tables vs CSS
Hi,
I may regret posting this one .....
In my convoluted explorations of all things CSS I came across this site
http://www.table2css.com/ which provides some inexpensive software that
converts table based HTML into CSS.
As NOF pages are table based I thought I might find something useful
here, if only to better understand bits of CSS.
Why would you do this? I hear you ask. Well, it's more about learning
CSS (for me at least) than using it, as once you convert a site you'll
probably never be able to maintain that site in NOF again.
This started because I wanted to experiment with site-style changes from
the visitor point of view but try as I may I'm struggling to even
provide a page background change. In fact I can't figure out how to
apply a div Id or Class to a layout region (easy on a text box or table
and most other objects).
Anyway, maybe Table2CSS has other uses? It did, however, get me to
thinking...what if NOF12 generated CSS based HTML?
Any thoughts?

Fusion is a tables and "prop" HTML generator. The prop being the 1 pixel
clearpix.gif that is expanded via height/width parameters to prop objects
within the HTML to coorispond to where you placed them in the GUI.
If you want to go with CSS positioning I would recommend using another HTML
authoring program such as a dedicated html editor or suite such as Homesite
or DW CS4 which allows you to do the coding yourself.

Re: Tables vs CSS
Mike,
Yuk, tried DW and hated every second of it. Not looked at Homesite as I
understood Adobe/Macromedia abandoned it last year sometime.
Like I said I just experimenting and trying to get the best out of NOF.
But sometimes it feels like NOF just doesn't want to play!!

Adobe did end development of Homesite. It's a real shame as I have used it
since it was an allaire program over a decade ago and it is still my "go to"
editor when I want to do a little down and dirty mucking round on live web
pages (log into the server and edit the actual live html document). I will
probably keep using it until it will no longer install in newer OS. So far
so good.

Re: NOF : Tables vs CSS
Or you could just use NOF to generate pages in XHTML instead of in
tables? Although, as per some of my other posts, you may need to change
your design techniques in NOF to get it to generate correctly...

Microsoft Expression Web may be worth a look.
There's a downloadable 30 day trial.

Re: Tables vs CSS
I started with HomeSite also way back before Bradbury? sold it to
Allaire. Then it started to get bloated. My editor of choice now is
HTMLKit - comprehensive and free.
cheers

Re: Tables vs CSS
In my experience, these quickie table to CSS conversion apps do a horrible
job. They make everything into APDivs (aka Fixed Layouts in NOF). The
resulting code is rigid, inflexible and not something you want to learn
from.
If you're serious about learning CSS positioning, you can get a great start
from the following links:
