Any page of any site, new or old crashes NOF 11

"999999,99999" at bottom of NOF window, pop-up sez "00000001x00000001".

No known changes, all Norton/Defender in-place, memory / hdd checks Ok.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Perhaps a little more information (tmi) is required?

I've been happily operating v.11 on this machine for quite some time. Monday
03/08/10, during the course of a clients "life or death update" (uh huh. It
wasn't) the machine crashes NOF altogether.

Any site will open but when loading any given page the software crashes. I
attached a screen snap for NOF's observation and submitted it last Wednesday
but have heard nothing as of yet.

If a new site is created (I used a zero-border example) and the page is
loaded, NOF also crashes. If a simple 4-page existing site is opened, the
same result : Fusion.exe - Application Error sez "The instruction at
"0x00000001" (blah, blah) "... memory could not be "read"", then Fusion
dumps completely. If the site is re-opened. Fusion states that a corrupt
file is going to be - successfully - repaired, but the cycle continues. A
look at the bottom of the Fusion window before closing the dump notification
shows "99999, 99999 99999x99999 999%". This error is noted on any/all
sites, single-page new, multi-page existing, this is what I get.

Fortunately I am able to modify the site via another machine and the client
is, again, happy but now it's me that's stressed. The backup machine is a
very slow laptop.

I've re-installed the software but the same thing occurs. Chkdsk /f,
mem.checks... no issues shown. Restart to "last known working" at the boot
level didn't help and I don't know where to go from here. No known
changes, all Norton/Defender stuff in-place and current; memory / hdd checks

Take a look at the event viewer in XP (Control Panel>Performance and
Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer). Are there any
indications of errors (either from NOF or other applications or systems
resources)?

You might also try a system restore to roll back any recent Windows
updates, especially if there have been any 64bit updates (4GB Ram
implies that the machine is 64bit).

If everything seems ok in event viewer, you could try to export the site
via a template on the slow laptop and import that to a new project on
the misbehaving machine. If it still occurs, you could try re-install
NOF in a different directory on the XP machine.

Finally, have there been any recent Norton updates? In my experience
that product can be a bit, how shall I say......a bit heavy handed. You
could look at the Norton logs to see it it complained about NOF or any
component recently.

Richard ~ thanks. I'll look into all of this.

I found a reference to HermanAgent (phishing around Google for the
Windows-pop mentioning the "... can't read memory" issue), an expoiter of
honest machines like this. After Symantec scans the machine I'll check the
reports as you indicate, then perhaps roll-back.

An Optimization, Export Template, OpenFromTemplate provides the same result
but I have yet to export the template from the laptop. This also will be
attempted.

Well, sir, the XP Performance panel shows more clean than my socks. No
entries of any kind.

The Event Viewer is interesting, there are but a couple entries that appear
not-related and I'll look them up. I find no entries regarding NetObjects,
NOF or Fusion. I'll spin NOF up once more and re-view the results - just
for fun.

I'll keep looking. Oh, and there are always updates from Norton and
Windows.

Chris, there *should* be something being reported on the Fusion
application crash in event viewer, after all it is an application fail
and that should be logged. However, even if you find it, there may not
be much to go on as it is likely to be a secondary fault.

These types of application crashes are usually caused by corrupt
programs, dll's or registry entries. The way I often explain this
behaviour is to liken it to a blown electrical fuse. The fuse is a
secondary fault, caused by something else. Replacing the fuse without
repairing the underlying fault is likely to result in further pain.

In this case, assuming the "memory cannot be read" fault is caused by
more insipid issue, you need to fix that too. Not an easy task since
you are working in the dark not knowing what the root cause is.

Debugging these problems is all about finding a breadcrumb trail of
symptoms and that's where the event viewer comes in. Also rolling back
any system changes one step at a time sometimes leads to an epiphany, as
does toggling system resources in the Services viewer.

Debugging in that way is satisfying when you find the smoking gun, but
it is time consuming and often leaves a degree of apprehension in case
it's a stability problem. Sometimes, it is quicker and easier to revert
to a system image from a time that the platform was stable. Depending
on what else the machine was being used for, it might be an option,
since you have the NOF templates available on another machine.

(....and yes, in case you are wondering, hardware/software debug is part
of my trade!)

Richard, thanks again and I apologise for not replying sooner ~ life demands
time. If you are still monitoring this, a new finding/result will close
this thread and cause me to create a new one.

Yes, saw Windows references to NOF crashing but providing little info.

Roll-back? A wonderful thought but I've ne-eh-ever been able to roll this
machine back. It just won't do it. And not for this issue either, there is
no bias to it.

Un-installing is a resultantly filthy process requiring Windows' Registry to
be cleaned (5) times and, a Win-pop warning of further 'linkage' to the
remaining NOF directories. It must still be in there somewhere - like a
Symantec install and how it etches itself onto the inside case of the HDD
and just wont "LEAVE!". A re-install returns the same issue. However....

The wife was logged-in last night and asking me to solve her logon issues
(after years of complaining about her use of mine and the confusiono of
Outlook email, etc.) and low-and-behold, I've found Fusion to work just fine
w/her logon! "And a new thread was borne"

I'll create that thread now. Thanks again for your efforts on this trouble,
