Thanks for your suggestion. Took out the weird code (probably remnants of Word formatting) and works!
Comments for others - using NOF on Windows 7 at work, and Windows 10 at home and both work well - but both machines have enough RAM & CPU resources. I save my site in Dropbox so can work on it from either location.
Just occasional hiccoughs on the Win 7 fixed by a restart and relaunch of NOF.

Had the exact same problem here.

Turned out to be turning Passive FTP on fixed the whole thing.
