Components - how they "don't" work

hello, i hope someone can guide me with respect to this problem. i have tried everything but the solution to get components to work. I just don't know the solution. just a simple login page can't be created. followed all the steps in the wiki guide but all i get is a grey square. any clues to what i can try next? thank you for the help.

The grey square is the component. You have to publish it to see it working.

a local publish is all you need for testing, if happy, then you can use remote publish
