Trouble setting image as background

When I set the image in Styles/background - it only sets the image within the layout. How do I set the background of the scalable background area seen on the users's screen that surrounds/is outside of the borders of the layout (and what do you call that area?) On my current web site, http://www.grayhavenwinery.com , both areas are set to light grey and I can't for the life of me figure out how I set the outer color. Is it possible to set the same image for both background areas? I want it to look like the same image, not an image inside of another image. Thanks!

Make a background image and set its properties in the Manage Styles box to repeat horizontally (you can also select a solid colour). In your page layout, create a layout region and set its background to whatever colour or image you want.
