Is it possible to get listed for free

Is it possible to get listed on search engines for free or at little cost.
I'm not mean, I just don't have much disposable income.
I'm also only talking of being listed in UK, I have seen several things to do with Google "Free but only for US".
Also I understand you have to put a list of words somewhere on each page for the engines to pick up, where and how ?.

Heck the dummy site I reference in the tut was 1st page ranked for a while and it did not even exist.
