Dynamic vs Fixed Layouts
Hello stupid me again. lol I read the posts for Overlapping text boxes in
Foxfire and it is sorta the similar situation I have. I was forced to use
the Fixed Layout to get my site to show up the way I wanted it to look
because when I try to use Dynamic all my items are thrown drastically across
the page and are not where I intended them to be at all.
Basically if somone views my webpage I sometimes end up having to tell them
to change their Text size to Medium and it usually looks correct. I would
love to have it just work the way it is supose to instead of people having
to change their browser text size to be able to browse the site. Like I said
before I am not up on my "Tech Talk" so the simplest of explanations would
be appreciated. My current website is done with NOF8 but am also currently
working with NOF10 to redo my website from scratch. But I can't seem to get
the Dynamic layout working properly with either.
Sincerely befuddled,
Gail

Re: Dynamic vs Fixed Layouts
Hi Gail,
First off, "site look funny?" is unprofessional. Fixed layouts do not
render well in all browsers. You may think it looks ok but it's very hard
to control how your page looks with different text and screen sizes when you
use fixed layouts.
Dynamic layouts are much easier to work with as long as you do not overlap
or 'layer' objects. If you do, your page will spread out across the screen,
as you described.
If you have trouble aligning objects on the page, use text boxes, tables &
layout regions. These tutorials may give you some ideas.

Thank you so much. Sometimes it looks good and sometimes it doesn't. When it
doesn't I usually hear about it and I have to tell them to try and change
their text size.

Re: Dynamic vs Fixed Layouts
Thank you I will surely be checking those out. I have been trying to
eliminate using "Fixed" and only being a "Dynamic" user. I do not overlap
any of my objects or text when making the site that is why I didn't
understand why my stuff shifted so much.
My Goal is to be able to get rid of the "Site Look Funny" Text once I get to
check out those Tutorials.
Thanks so much again for your time!
Best Wishes,
Gail

Re: Dynamic vs Fixed Layouts
Hi Gail
If you set your text size by pixels, instead of by relativee size, then in
IE the text will stay the same size and the 'funny' look will disappear. You
will find that each font needs a pixel size that suits its shape, ie 10pt
Tahoma is 13pixels. This is not as effective in FF, but it does make a real
difference.
You can use a dynamic site, but where you need to put overlapping objects
use a fixed layout region. I find that works quite well.
Hope this is of help.

Re: Dynamic vs Fixed Layouts
If everyone in the world used the same browser and screen size, web design
would be simple.
Peter is right. If you use pixel sized text, you get better cross browser
rendering (IE, FF, Safari-Mac, etc.) But fixed sized text poses a
readability problem for people with less than perfect eyesight and/or high
resolution displays.
Micah's shiny new laptop probably shipped with a default screen resolution
setting of 1600 x 1200. Ever try to view 13 px text on a high res display?
It's almost impossible. That's what it's like for seniors too. So if your
target audience includes seniors or people with neat new laptops, you should
give them options to have bigger text size if they need it. And that
requires building your pages with plenty of wriggle room.

Re: Dynamic vs Fixed Layouts
Thank you very much for all the help. I will play around with the
suggestions and see what I can figure out. It's just it has always looked
fine on all my computers when I visited the site so I never even knew there
was a problem till somone wrote me about it.
I'm glad I found this group I have picked up a bunch of good tips by reading
the posts.
Thanks to everyone who suggested something! If I have another question I
know where to come now. NOF's tech support took too long to get answers and
they wanted me to send them my files which they always tell me the never
received.
Kind Regards,
Gail
