How important is it to use web safe colours now-a-days?

I do not worry about them myself. I do not have any browsers coming to my
sites that are older than about 3 years.

    Web-safe = 256 color display.

I doubt they are very many web users that still have a VGA display.

Modern display adapters routinely are set for millions of colors.

It is not the browsers I am worried about. I am worried about the colour
depth setting of the computer. For example, those who connect to a
terminal server often use the default of 8-bit colour depth.

    You design for your audience.

If they're primarily 8-bit, act accordingly.

Hope you don't have any jpeg images to display.

    Hello John,

The last time I checked, 8 bit clients were hovering from 1 - 4 % of users.
There were about 2 % of users in which these stats could not be resolved.
This was about a month ago that I actually checked.

Generally, as stated in a prior post, you would cater towards your visitors.
I would suggest placing an analytics type code on your site in order to
track these stats, among many others. There are several free ones available
on the net, your host may have them installed as well.

The need to use websafe colours arises when you want an image to merge
neatly into it's background e.g. a logo jpeg/gif background may need to
merge into the cell./div background colour of a header. In this circumstance
the pc will render the cell/div background from the RGB code you use and if
it is not a web safe colour then it is likely that there will be a visible
difference to the background of your logo jpeg/gif.
In this respect websafe colours are still important.
