Tables with wide borders in CSS
I have since discovered that CSS CAN do tables with wide borders like I
am used to doing, but the display has issues requiring workarounds.

Click the As at the top of this site - table based sites can't do that.

Of course tables have their place for tabular data and they are supported in
modern standards. but tables shouldn't be used to position objects because
the content gets tied to the presentation.

Nice site, but if we're being nit-picky, it doesn't validate - 12 errors!

Which doesn't alter the fact that the presentation is separate from the
content so it can be presented in different ways for different users or
technologies. Using tables to position objects doesn't allow you to do that.
