Default still unable to external link nav button

This should be a simple problem but it is whipping my *ss
I am trying to publish a photo gallery on one site and link to it from a
second site via the nav bar.
I have spent over 12 hours trying to accomplish this with no luck. I can't
believe it can be this hard, so it must be me.
I don't know if I just can't understand the directions for customizing the
nav bar, or if the directions just don't work.
One thing is certain without some guidance it is not going to happen, can
    someone please help?

    Tony,

Not sure why you would be having so much trouble (unless I just don't
    understand the problem).

Once your nav bar is created, select the "Edit Custom..." button. Then from
the Custom Navigation Bar Structure panel, select External Link from the
drop down Link Type menu. Type in the web address of the link you want to
go to and selct SAVE. Select the new external link (on the left) and press
ADD to bring it over to the right side of the panel. From there you can drag
it to any position in the menu bar (and also rename it if you don't want it
to display in the menu as the link address). You can also select a target if
you don't want the page to open in the same browser window. That's about
it...if you are having some other problem, let me know.
