OT: New Computer OS
My current computer is a P4 from 2001! It's time to get a new one. So far
I've looked at HP and Gateway. My brother thinks I should stay with XP-Pro
because Vista's a whole new way of doing things and a big learning curve. He
just doesn't like it. How are you all doing with Vista? Any major glitches?
Would you recommned it or if you could do it again would you stay with XP?
Any hot tips on vendors and/or specific specs you'd recommend would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Sheila

Re: New Computer OS
Shiela,
Might want to also consider a Micron system. http://www.mpccorp.com/
I've been purchasing these for work over the last 10 years and have had
great luck with them. Support has also been very good.
re: XP or Vista. On the same machine XP screams compared to Vista, or at
least that's my experience. Recently purchased a new (and economical)
laptop for work and it only came with Vista. I quickly found that it was
just too slow to be productive so I took a chance and loaded XP Pro on the
machine and the difference was night & day. Have to qualify: The laptop
was not real heavy on memory and I'm sure this had a lot to do with the
performance issue. Comparing apples to apples with the same hardware, I
think XP would be my OS of choice.

Re: New Computer OS
Thanks Chuck. Did you find much learning curve for Vista? My new system will
have 4 gigs RAM so hopefully that'll make a difference. I'll go check out
Micron now. Thanks.

Re: New Computer OS
You know I forget now but I think it was only a Gig.

Re: New Computer OS
Sheila,
I didn't spend much time with Vista. MS changed the interface enough to
mess with my mind to the point where I just didn't want to spend the time to
get acclimated with it.
Everything with XP became so second nature to me that I found it very
frustrating to try and pick up the nuances of Vista.... it's like I have
enough to do with just doing my daily job that I didn't want the aggravation
of yet another change to the way Windows does things..... I guess I'm a
little stubborn that way : )

Re: New Computer OS
You might be installing 4 gigs, but unless you buy 64-bit Vista (which
is probably NOT what you are getting,) your computer will only be using
3. 4 is a waste of money.

Re: New Computer OS
Thanks for that tip Laurence. I didn't know that. Is there any advantage to
getting Vista as 64 bit since there aren't any programs using it yet? I
could choose 64 bit if there is. Does windows itself work better in 64 bit?

Hi Laurence,
Could you please explain to me how a computer decides how much ram to use
according to the operating system? I'm not super-knowledgeable about
hardware, but this just doesn't make sense to me. I've always understood
that increased ram speeds up all processes, regardless of o/s. And, I have a
4 gig system running XP so, if you're correct, how do I unleash that other
gig? No, I will not even consider going to Vista.

Re: New Computer OS
Tia...since my question in this thread is about XP vs Vista, could you
please ellaborate on WHY you won't even consider going to Vista?
Thanks,
Sheila
