Thread: Farewell NetObjects 10 - there are too many bugs and crashes for me

I've just dumped my trial version of NO 10 because it was just too slow. I
have been with NOF since 2 and seen it grow with all sorts of add-on's, some
good, some just cosmetic. I now think it is too unreliable and I suspect
they introduced re-optimisation to solve the multiple crashings. But that in
its'self is very erratic on both 9 and 10. I don't have a problem with the
methodology, but now I'm spending half my time waiting of stuff to happen.
There has to be a more reliable programme out there similar to NOF and not a
    complicated as Dreamweaver.

For what it's worth, I use 10 daily with zero issues.

I have a Dual Core system with max ram for Vista. Which no doubt helps
    performance.

    I never paste in content which probably helps most of all. (-;

People with different systems have reported radically different results with
NOF 10 speedwise. I found it slow on initial release but successive updates
seemed to cure those problems for me.

    Me neither.

However one thing I never do is try to bring an old website forward.

If I was going to do that, I would export it as a template from the old
version, then create a new site in V10.

But other than a few (reported) bugs in NOF10, it is running very well for
    me.

    Charles,

I've usually just opened a copy of a site rather than doing the template
    thing. No problems.

But then, I've never stored sites in the default User Site folder location.

That is good to know Chuck.

I always figure it is better to error on the side of paranoia than to be
too bold and pay for it<g>.

    > But then, I've never stored sites in the default User Site folder location.

I haven't since we had the option to change it easily<g>

Now if we could just get WSP to make the default location for sites to be
somewhere other than under program files...

    ;-)

    Hi Chuck,
Is it in fact better to store sites outside NOF user sites folder? I so
    why?

    Roger,

Once upon a time, we had different people working on site files at different
times. So we stored sites in a User Sites on a server in the office and did
a mapped drive thing from each desktop machine on the network, settling on
    Drive W. ('W' for web).

    Life was good.

Now, our designers usually work from home and telecommute (gas is
expensive!). No more working on the same sites most of the time.

But, since the site files are on the W drive, the method persists.

For example, here in my home office, I have multiple hard disks in my PC and
one is labeled W. I copy a site folder from the server in the office to a
thumb drive and move it to my PC as necessary. If I want to work on it at
the office, I copy it back with the changes. Same drive letter, same path,
    all is well with Fusion.

Now, with Vista, it's even better to have a User Sites folder outside of the
Program Files folder. Everyone using Vista probably knows that by now.

When upgrading to a new version of Fusion, with the sites not being in the
previous version of Fusion's folders, I can just open a copy of a site
rather than having to export a template to create a new site in the new
    version of fusion's folder path.

    So I have w:\User Sites\Sitename with a sitename-8.nod, sitename-9.nod,
sitename-10.nod, for example. With each Fusion release, I name the new nod
file with the version it's in. This also allows easily going back to a
previous (although dated) version if necessary. Never had to... but I could.
At some point, I delete the oldest version for housekeeping purposes..

You don't have to have a different drive letter. You could just make a User
Sites folder in My Documents, for example. However, if you're running XP and
ever have to re-install the OS for any reason, Microsoft in their infinite
wisdom (?) empty the contents of My Documents when you re-install over an
    existing install.

So if you use My Documents for storage, back up elsewhere from time to time.

Jeees! that's all beyond me Chuck. I just wondered if there was a problem
using the program user sites folder, because I'v never encounted one anyway.
As I said in another thread, I'm constantly worried nowadays about pages I
write in any version of NOF, in case they crash during re-optimization,
saving, importing, etc. etc. I just think the whole thing has become too
sophisticated and complicated for the webpro people to manage and I'm
spending a lot of time making sure the thing stays working properly instead
    of productive writing.
