Thread: really slow site.

    Default really slow site.

I am very frustrated with the slowness of just one of my larger sites, (for
me anyway), with some 500 objects and about 13 MB size. Every time I make a
page alteration, then local publish, it takes three minutes to appear in
Internet Explorer. Publishing to my server is normal speed. I re-optimize
every time I close the site, and also sometimes in the middle of working,
and have carefully purged all unused assets. I have no imported Word
documents, and have re-typed all text which may have been imported.
When I open the site it works fine for about three local publishes, then
reverts to the infuriating slowness. If I open Windows Task Manager it tells
me the page and NOF is "not responding," but then it eventually opens and
shows 'running.' It's as though there is some sort of bug in just this one
    site, but it's beyond me.
Can anyone please suggest how this is happening? Would upgrading to NOF11
cure it? I will try anything.

Could be a matter of RAM. How much do you have and with XP or Vista?

Good though Keith, but no, I have 295 GB of memory and using 15 GB. Also, it
only applies to one site out of thirty I run, and not the largest either. I
sure hope someone comes up with an answer because it's quite ridiculously
slow after I make a few alterations and try to local publish.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Vista would only address 3 Gb of RAM
and XP even less. Looking at the response Roger I think you are referring to
your hard drive. How much physical RAM do you have and are you running Vista
or XP (or even W2K maybe)?

    Ian,

32-bit versions of Windows are limited to 4GB max, but some of that
address space is used to map your graphics adapter. Subtract the amount
of RAM on your graphics card from the memory you've got installed,
that's how much Windows can use. 64-bit Vista ups the limit to 8GB (same
thing with graphics memory). Unless it's written explicitly for 64-bit,
any one application can only use 2GB.

The above info culled from an article in the current issue (#287) of the
    PC Plus (UK) magazine!

    Roger,

Have you applied the updates for NOF 10? If I remember correctly a lot
of folks saw a big improvement after update 3...

So not 295 Gigabytes of Ram then??? See what I mean. I'm not that worried
about the physical limitations of the system just 295 Gigabytes of RAM.

Thanks for your input everyone Ian is right, my mistake. I have a Dell
Vostro laptop: with 1.99 Gb of RAM: 789 MHz: XP pro with service pack 2.
First of all though, as I said in my original post, this only occurs on one
site, others which as nearly as big are just fine. However, I don't know
anything about the actual power used up in NOF10, but I also run Photoshop,
which is a bigger programme and that's fine. Please let me know what you all
think, because it is driving me mad, (every time I try to publish I go and
put the kettle on, make some tea, and sometimes it's still thinking about
it). If you think it is my machine, how can I get some more whoomp!

<this only occurs on one site, others which are nearly as big are just fine>

That sort of narrows the problem down - don't you think? You obviously have
something going on with this particular nod file. Either too many assets
for NOF to manage. Spurious code pasted into wrong parts of your document.
MS Office junk. Bad MasterBorder.... Was this a legacy site that you
migrated into NOF10 or did you build this in 10 from scratch?
