Default OT - Video Editing Software

Anyone know of a good, reliable and inexpensive (or freeware) video editing software? I need to add several 30 sec. video clips to a client's site. Up until now, I've only used Windows Movie Maker to create .wmv clips that I then pull into one of the plug-in components in NOF (Real Player, Quicktime, WMP).

However, that usually was video that I captured into the software with my video camera. This time the client gave me CDs that he had edited elsewhere and are stored on the CD in .vob format. I've successfully converted them to .mpeg files. The problem is that every time I pull them into Movie Maker, the software stalls and eventually stops responding.

I have found a few softwares that are for editing and then burning to DVD, but need something to edit (nothing fancy, basically just split video into 30 second clips and mute sound) and then save into a web compatible format.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sony Movie Studio - wonderful software!!!! it is basically Vegas Lite...
Vegas is a well known higher end video editing tool.

Stay away from Pinnacle Studio... TERRIBLE stability and support.

Movie Studio is top notch software!

We use Ulead - and Sony Vegas, and Serif, and Nero, and Pinnacle, and Adobe
Premiere and ?? there are at least another couple that I can't remember. The
thing is that they don't all do quite the same thing in the same way when
you come down to the finer points of the respective operation of the
package. I'm sure you've heard it about Graphics or NOF v DW or whatever.

At the end of the day it's what you like, what you're happy with and what
gets the job done for you.

You pays your money and you takes your chance. Another learning curve for a
    different set of applications.

Best of luck. Be interested to know what you chose.

You could use the free Windows Media Encoder
    located here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.aspx

it will covert MPG's as well
    MPEG -1 and -4

I use Roxio VideoMaker. I converted all my parents old 8mm films to DVD and I used it to make a highlight DVD with captions, overlays, sounds and music. Pretty easy to use and works with MPG, MOV and AVI files. Cost about $50.

Many of the consumer video editing packages use Windows Media Encoder as their "engine".

And WME is free. Barebones, but it'll convert those mpegs to wmv format for the web and allow you to set the length for a clip and turn off audio recording.

For today, I chose the ULead VideoStudio 9.0 software because of the 30-day
trial download. It worked excellent for what I needed. I assume the reason
that Windows Movie Maker wouldn't work (stop responding) is because the
original media files were just too large for the software to handle. ULead
did not quit on me once and actually rendered my output files very quickly.
    (Purchase price $99)

I didn't get a chance to really play with all the features, as I was on a
time schedule, but I THINK I didn't like the fact that there's no "screening
room, or clip board." When I clipped a portion of the video, it was gone.
I could be totally wrong here as I didn't get a chance to experiment with
    the software.

I also downloaded a freeware called DVD Shrink 3.2 which seemed to work
pretty well as well. (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html) I originally
tried to compress the original mpeg files and then pull them into Movie
Maker to get the job done. But, they were still too large (even at half the
file size, but the same bit rate [it was like 165914 bps or something]) for
Movie Maker to handle. So, ultimately I didn't use this software, but think
I'll keep it in the file cabinet for possible future use.

Maybe after the 30-day trial for ULead runs out, I'll try the Sony
MovieStudio. (Purchase price $89) (I didn't see the trial version earlier
today, or probably would have tried this one out first.)
