    Default OT... new computer recommendations?

    Hello All,

I am waiting for my boxed version of NOF 9 and I am planning on ordering a
    new computer.
I am looking at the Pentium dual core with RAID 1 ..
Anybody here really happy with your computer manufacturer ? Care to
    recommend where I should look?

    Much thanks!

    -Denis

Depends on what you are using it for other than web design... pretty much
any machine will handle web design work...

now if you also want to do video, or high end gaming...thats a different
    story.

Stay away from the big box retailer models - and also the "boutique"
    pcs..

Since Lenovo took over IBM, I cannot speak for them, but owning several
older IBM units, the support is the best - one call, you get an english
speaking person in about 2 minutes...but they arent the most geared to
video and gaming...and you pay alot for the IBM logo hehehe.

At one time ABS won many awards... www.buyabs.com i used them in the
past and was always happy with them.

PCs have pretty much become a commodity these days - all of them made as
cheaply as possible... not like the old days where you got solid cases,
and cooling fans that never wore out....

Oh, and IGNORE any PC World or PC Mag reviews.. those are basically
glorified advertisements where Dell (their largest advertisers) typically
    wins.

check out epinions.com for end user real reviews on models you consider.

I got through PCs too quickly to care about long term - so I buy whatever
is the hot deal of the week... I have one compaq, one hp, two IBMs, a
panasonic toughbook, a dell laptop, a dell desktop, an asus laptop, an
ibm laptop... they all pretty work the same in terms of me being happy...
some have more powerful hardware...some do not... (yes my home office is
    a mess!!!) hahaha

I've been really happy with my zd series hp pavilion desktop replacement
excellent dual monitor support, high end graphics, multi-media powerhouse
I am so pleased with it, I will never go back to a desktop unit.

cdw, frys, bestbuy and of course hp have them. If you can get one loaded
    with
XP Media Center less than 2004 get it. 2005 Media Center no longer supports
    joining domains.

wow..so they turned it into XP Home with a TV connector! ouch hahaha
    thats good to know Mike.

I agree with Mike - I have an PortableOne MX (www.portableone.com) and love
it.. its a great unit and after using various laptops (Ibm thinkpads and
panasonic toughbooks) I will choose a laptop over a desktop any day!

However - not everyone can go that route.. depends on what your plan to do
    with it....

tell us a little more about your use....

I love my computers...but then we build them ourselves and sell them as
    well.

We're an Intel Products Dealer. The advice about staying away from the big
    box types is good.

Their idea of an acceptable failure rate is way out of line. My acceptable
    failure rate is zero.

No el cheapo components either. You get what you pay for.

    Sweet,

Mine is one of a kind. It is a typical zd 7030 but with a twist.
    I beta tested this model. A DUAL P4 3.2 HT.Yep "Dual".
I responded to a marketing call from HP and was one of about
500 others that were asked to field test the units. I guess they
never made it to production as I have not seen a dual processor
on a laptop since but we all got to keep ours. So I am happy I
    participated.

and yes it is a shame about media center being downgraded.
I still don't understand why they did that.

I have two monitors, networked to a couple of other computers, use Corel
Draw 12, PhotoPaint, Quickbooks Pro, NOF 8 and many other apps.

I liked the idea of the dual core processor - to run backups or scans at the
same time as regular work on the computer.

Thanks for all that contributed their input!!!!

Dual core is actually like having 4 processors on one CPU. Since the dual
    cores also hyperthread.

    Denis,

I'm partial to Micron PC's http://www.buympc.com We started buying
Micron's about 6 years ago after having a lot of trouble with Dell's (power
supplies). Could have just been a bad batch of Dell's. We've purchased
close to twenty Micron's in recent years and never had one go bad. Just my
    $.02

I started out with Microns...before we became a dealer.

    Never had a bad one.

I still use Micron memory exclusively.
