    Mark,

I do something similar on one of my sites......

AllWebMenus allows you to update your navigation, site wide, without having
to republish your entire NOF site. This way you can have to have a Left
Master Border Navigation scheme and drag your masterborder layout (or table)
to tile your image and just publish one page at a time and upload to your
site. AWM makes it nice as you wouldn't have to republish your entire site
to update the navigation. You can do a page at a time and upload just that
page and then change AWM to add the new page and easily upload the AWM
Menu.js file that all other previously published pages will pull from. It
doesn't matter if the MasterBorder changes on the previous pages change
because you're not republishing and uploading. If you do have to edit a
previously generated page just adjust the length of the materborder layout
and republish and load just that page to your site.

Could you not use an external menu creator like AllWebMenus PRO
    (www.likno.com)?

    That way you can
    - use Likno's free NOF component to place the menu anywhere, on any page
    - alter the menu structure in one place, AllWebMenus PRO
    - publish the site via NOF which also publishes the new menu
    - all pages show the same menu

    Or am I missing something?

Default resizing height of master border background

Chris tried to help me with this same issue a year ago. That time it was a
tiny site and I just gave up and didn't use a master border. I don't know if
I'm missing something basic here or if this just can't be done.

I need to use a background image in a layout region. If the page is long and
I manually stretch the background to fit the correct depth to match the body
on the right then ALL pages will have the left master border be that tall. I
want it to be short if the body is short but expand when it needs to be
tall. The reason for the master border is that it contains the navigation. I
thought about trying a table but then I'm sure the flyouts of the navigation
would muck that up big time. I know I can get rid of the master border and
copy/paste the navigation in place. Then I'd be able to custom size each
page. I've done it this way many times. But this time it's for a client I
KNOW is going to keep changing his site structure. It's going to be a PAIN
to have to manually change EVERY CUSTOM navgiation when there's no master
    border in place.

I hope this is clear. And that I'm not being stupid. Is there a solution for
    this?
    Thanks!
    Sheila

I came up against this exact same problem last year. The only way around it
I found was to use an external program. AllWebMenus PRO doesn't take that
long to learn and it saved me enough time & hassle to warrant the
    investment.

Sorry I don't have a pure NOF solution for you. :-(

The only external menu component I own is Bitmotion's Cascadia. I'm looking
at how to use NOF nav structure with a master border. Should be a basic
concept. But it appears as if it can't be done. Surely I'm missing something
simple here! I do not want to buy or learn anything new for this.

    Thanks!

I'm on my way out right now but will ftp some examples when I return.

the problem is that what's in the left master border isn't changing, unless
    I change it manually. Only
what's in the body to the right is changing. And when I expand the master
    border
to meet the needs of the body on the page, THEN all the other
pages end up with that expanded master border. That's the issue. Especially
since the body layout regions in all the other pages have NOT expanded to
match the master border expansion. Do you follow me? Try it and you'll see.

    Thanks,

I think I am beginning to see. UNtil I see the details I can't be sure. But
I seem to remember once letting the masterborder be the size it needs and
faking short pages by using a large area of color on the bottom of the
affected body pages. This may be totally wrong for your needs - I am having
trouble visualising but will play tonight.

Forgive if this doesn' t suit. Ideas can't hurt.

OK, I've posted a couple of examples:

    www.hoffmangraphics.com/ATOC/html/test.html
This shows how when the body copy pushes the layout area down the left
sidebar, master border, doesn't know to expand down and leaves an ugly gap.

    www.hoffmangraphics.com/ATOC/html/short.html
This shows how if I adjust the left sidebar, master boarder to fit the need
of the body on the site map page, then the body of this page doesn't adjust
    and leaves the ugly gap.

And yes I could have different master borders, but I'd have to have so many
that I may as well not have them. It would still require me to change the
navigation on each master border. I may as well not have the master border.
That DOES solve the gap/resizing issue. It just means I'm manually making
any needed navigation adjustments (and I'm NOT willing to do navigation in
a 3rd party component as my solution, right now... maybe at some point). It
just seems to me that this is a flaw in how the left master border works. I
can't figure out ANY way that it would EVER work to have a left master
border unless the overall page size stays the same on every page. How do any
of you use a left master border?

    Thanks,
    Sheila

And I know - this is obvious. But did you consider using different master
borders? Well, the same, but different, if you know what I mean.

Sorry if that is a very stupid question.

Sheila, can you post a screen shot of what you are trying to achieve. I
can't visualise it. I never say die in Fusion and find workarounds to most
things that people use AllWeb Menus for.

I know. This coming from the woman who couldn't even set her Flash player
    settings!

I am a big believer in keeping things in the program, wherever possible, for
just the reasons you commented on.
