Re: resizing height of master border background
Yes, the site background. You hadn't mentioned the issued of centering
so I didn't take that into account, but yes, that is precisely the
problem... centering the background this way becomes a problem. I've
written about this several timesin the newsgroups and played around with
several solutions, but none are perfect. What you want to do can
definitely be done, but you have to make some choices between several
different approaches. One solution works nicely but will sacrifice the
masterboarder for your left navigation. We get so accustomed to using
that simple method for placing navigation on each page that we forget
that it ain't really that hard to manually paste a navbar on the pages
if need be. So if you're ok with that, make one large layout region
that is your page. Give that layout region the background similar to
the one I sent you... the complete background with the left shadowed
edge and the navigation background and the white page and the right
shadowed edge. Place your navbar where it belongs on the page, and
repeat this onto every page of the site. And place the footer graphic
that I sent you in the masterborder at the bottom. Center the site and
you're done. Besides forfeiting the left-side masterboarder, which is
no big deal, the other thing you deal with in this solution is that when
each page is a big layout region, you need to get used to the fact that
you can no longer marquee select several items to move them because
you'll find that you've inadvertantly selected the layout area, as
well. You'll quickly see what I mean once you set this up. You'll need
to click select each item individually. It's a pain, but you'll get
used to it. I was excited when I saw that NOF9 allowed you to lock page
elements... I thought that would be the answer this problem, but alas
alack, when you lock the layout region you lock all of it's contents, as
well. That makes sense, but from the point of view of this particular
problem, I wish you had the option to lock a layout region but NOT it's
contents.
If you hate that option, there are other solutions, too, but each has
it's own quirks. Before going into them, I'll wait and see if this one
works for you.

Re: resizing height of master border background
Thanks Laurence. Yes, I already was aware of all you wrote. That's exactly
how I've done this same thing in the past. I've always been too busy to try
to figure out if there's a better way. I did a 200 page site last year where
everytime I had to make a navigation change I had to redo the copy/paste
process on all 200 pages. That's why the master border is important.
And Michael (and others) who've mentioned includes and/or other external
navigation solutions definitely offer a viable alternative. It's simply that
I thought we SHOULD be able to do this in NOF. And I'm now pretty confident
that we can NOT!
Thanks all of you.

Re: resizing height of master border background
Yes, incredible as it may seem, there's no direct and easy way to do
this in NOF... but there are many workarounds. Another one is to simply
add a couple of lines of HTML code at the beginning of the page to
create a one-cell table with your defined background... and then the
entire NOF site sits inside that table... and then at the end of the
page, you close the table. It takes about 3 lines of code, it's
extremely easy and it works quite well.

Re: resizing height of master border background
Hi,
The options to do this, based on the columns themselves, are either a
CSS based faux column technique, or the application of javascript within
onload(). Both would require tinkering with the code to ensure that the
styles or function was applied to the appropriate section of the page.
One issue with applying these techniques to a NOF site may be the table
structure but both these techniques {or similar, I wrote a js solution
for this about 4 years ago} work for me in the wild.

Re: resizing height of master border background
Okay. I admit defeat. Want to know the interesting thing? I never noticed I
was having to resize anything, probably because at the end of every job -
before finally publishing the whole thing - I always go to every page and
pull up the bottoms and pull in the sides to the same measurement so I don't
get the tiny misalignment-between-pages thing. I am so amazed at this
automatic behaviour of mine.
Anyway, what I was wondering was whether a Sitestyle can be altered - I mean
its code page, not on the page itself. So that particular style can become
the basis for any left column layout we need to work in this way. I would
always, always, always find a way to work with a Sitestyle because it is
just so convenient to have automatic navigation. This feature is why I am
still with Fusion, and feel I could never leave.
Just a thought. Wish I had more time to play.
Ali
PS Sheila - love the colours in this site.

Re: resizing height of master border background
And by end graphics, I mean end of page, not endcaps.
Confused? You will be!
