Thread: Update2, centering problem

    Default Re: Update2, centering problem

    Two new thoughts, Kimmo,

I downloaded your test site with images to see what difference it would make
    if I used <center> instead of <div align="center">

I rebuilt the code with a <center> tag, saved it, and viewed the page in
three browsers - IE 6, FF 1.5, and Opera 8.5.

Even though HomeSite warned me - in red! - that the <center> tag is
deprecated in HTML 4.0, your site worked exactly the same as if I'd used the
<div align="center"></div> combination. It even worked when I used neither
tag and let the site left-align.

So all I can figure is that since those rollovers are within a table cell,
the cell <td> acts as the 'wrapper' or 'container' against which the
absolutely-positioned <divs> calculate where they're supposed to be.

Then I asked myself why your rollovers work in Internet Explorer but not in
    Firefox or Opera.

I don't know if this is the reason, but you declare the Javascript to be
version 1.2 - whereas Firefox and Opera work with Javascript 1.5. Internet
Explorer 6.0 supports JS version 1.3.

I would think that Firefox and Opera would be backwards compatible with
Version 1.2, but perhaps not - and that may not be the reason for the
    problem. Just a guess.

If there's anyone else reading this who knows Javascript, I'd be interested
in knowing if this could be the reason for Kimmo's site's rollovers only
    working in IE.

    L.

One more thing about the new update2. With old update2 and using it's
'center in browser', in those pages with top frame, it centered top frame
and layout area differently. It didn't centered them both together, layout
area was always in wrong place comparing to the top frame.

Now, at least so far what I can see, with new update2, it works perfectly
with top frame too, it centers both frame and layout area together and they
are just fine centered. Wrapped, as you said.

    Default Re: Update2, centering problem

The reason I ask is that Update 2 ***finally*** has the 'center in browser'
working correctly - it now inserts <div align="center"> directly after the
<body> tag and </div> directly before the </body> tag making what's often
called a 'wrapper'. It's based on this 'wrapper' that your layers take
their position and function correctly, I believe.

My guess is that if Fusion were still using the <center> tag, your rollovers
    would not work correctly.

The first 'Update 2' - which was withdrawn - also inserted the <div
align="center"> </div> tags but added another, erroneous tag in the <body>
tag which threw off the <div align="center"> </div> tags. That erroneous
tag <body text-align: center> has been removed from the code with the
    ***revised*** AU2.

Now why those rollovers, although the page is now centered, do not work in
Firefox and Opera, I don't know. It's a shame, because they look good.

    Default Re: Update2, centering problem

    Good morning Lucian :-)

No, if I try to use 'old system' and put by hand beginning and end of the
body 'div thing' or only that 'center thing', nothing happens. In this site
centering works only if I use nof's inbuild 'Center in browser' system,
which is funny but good, as it never worked before :-)

fintest2 is a pure test, from which I'll only use front page and 'home' page
and only they are centered as I tested if it works ok. The other pages are
    not centered at all.

I should get site ready to give to the customer today, but after that I'll
try to add 'more poor man magic' to it later. I'll put here more final
    testadress.

Default Rollover code / Javascript version

    Hi, Kimmo,

I just read a post in another newsgroup which says that your version of
Javascript (1.2) may, in fact, be the reason the rollover actions for Vilkku
and Välkky's names only work in Internet Explorer.

How did you set up those actions?

There might be a better rollover script available (somewhere, I'm just
guessing) for the same purpose which incorporates a 'sniffer script' to
determine which browser is viewing the page and serves up the appropriate
    code.

    Lucian
