How to use variables?
I'm having a tough time trying to understand how to use variables? I even
have the NOF 9 users guide but can't fathom it, but it sounds like just what
I need. Is there a simpletons instruction sheet anywhere?

Re: How to use variables?
Hello Roger,
Actually here is the info on user-defined variables via our online
documentation:
http://netobjects.com/en/nof/9/00/do...d_variable.htm
Basically you could use it for an address or something that may change in
the future, the guides example is quarterly sales figures. You can update
them quarterly and anywhere within the site that they are placed they are
updated. Perhaps if you provide details on what you will be using them for
we can provide further insight and whether or not it is applicable to your
situation.

Doesn't the date provided by NOF's Text > Edit Field > Date & Time menu
item create a date (you can select as format just the year) that
automatically updates?

No! It puts a time stamp on the page that does not get updated.

Re: How to use variables?
Roger,
Fusion variables are used for simple substitution for text you would use
repeatedly on your pages.
You define the variable, assign a value and then you can place it using the
Insert HTML window of a text box, for example.
Let's say you wanted to have some text appear in multiple locations. Like a
meeting date for a meeting occurs every month.
Assign a "meeting" variable. Insert it in the appropriate locations on your
pages.
Then, each month when the date changes, you can just change the value of the
variable so it will change throught the site without you having to change
each occurance manually.
Make sense?

Re: How to use variables?
Thanks both, bit it's the "value" on the field I don't understand, and
nowhere can I find what a value is? If I can understand that I think I will
be OK.
I want to do a user defined variable on some figures in a table.

Re: How to use variables?
You still need to provide additional information in order to get a more
complete answer, but from your comment about "user defined variables",
my guess is that NOF variables have nothing at all to do with the type
of variable you are talking about. Why don't you describe the
situation. Will the site visitor be defining this variable, which will
then be applied to numbers in a table? That's done with a scripting
language, not NOF variables.

Re: How to use variables?
The trouble is I'm not sure what my client wants yet and I was starting to
try and learn about user defined variables which sound simple enough, but I
can't do this 'value' thing for the field. What's that about?

Re: How to use variables?
What value for what field? A typical use for a NOF user-defined
variable might be for, say, a copyright date. If you put 2006 on all
your pages, you may feel that you need to change it to 2007 next year...
page by page by page (assuming you didn't put it in a Master Border.)
But if you made 2006 a user-defined variable (you being the user, not
the site visitor), you could change that one variable next January and
all the pages would update accordingly.
