Thread: More bugs?

    Default Re: More bugs?

I know I wasn't invited to this thread and probably should only
    post apologetically, but ...

FWIW, the "too large" is caused, apparently, by something going
wrong with the Master Border. Changing the Master Border will
usually, so far anyway, fix that situation. I had it happen to
me when I had to recover a site from my server. First set the MB
to zero margins, and then Add a new master border to use, and it
worked fine. I also managed to repair the original master border
that caused the problem, but I've forgotten right now how I did
    it.

    <RANT>
IMO version 8 & 9 have gone "buggy", thus I've stayed with 7
because besides being the version I started with, perusing all of
the ng's for 7 thru 9. 7 appears by far the most stable.
Luckily, the archives are retained, so I've been gratefulto have
them. As much as I like Fusion, and agree that their db concept
is a good one, I will not yet upgrade just because of the types
of message contents in those groups.
IMO it's unacceptable to say "Don't use Photo Gallery; use
this other one instead." I -might- agree if this were a $40 app,
but it's not. Even the upgrade prices are preposterously high,
IMO. Therefore, it has to work as advertised. Considering the
cost, Fusion is more than required to do what it says it does.
Excuses without fixes forthcoming for free, are totally and
completely unacceptable and not a way to do business.
And I'll "neglect to mention" the initial fraud pulled on me
with my first phoney "fully functional" and "free" version of
    Fusion 7, a "$149 value" which couldn't be updated and couldn't
be used to upgrade! Nor will I mention how, when trying to
update or upgrade it, the program and the web site blamed
everything but reality for WHY the upgrade/update failed to
    recognize my version.
Yes, that caused me great frustration but I did like the app,
and WSP finally let me have a copy of the "real" Fusion 7 for
$40,but it's not something I will soon forget about, e.g. the
    bait & switch routine.
UNfortunately I DO really like Fusion 7 (with its updates).
    </rant>
    "!
For those reasons, I will, instead of upgrading, move to
another application if/when I need more than version 7 can
provide. IMO the app has reached a complexity beyond the ability
of WSP et al to properly test, starting at Version 8, and yet
continues to raise the cost with each succeeding rev.

Perhaps this answers some questions for the OP. Watch the post
not make it to the board now.

    Regards,

    Anthony,

I had to take some beauty sleep after my posts, but I believe that the
others have picked up where I left off with all the right answers but to
your plight. Both Chuck and Lucian are well respected in my book and have
    never led me a stray...

    Default Re: master borders

    Hi, Anthony,

Well, that page doesn't have a photo gallery, and the photo galleries seem
to be causing your problem, so that's why we're curious to see what they
might look like. But, as I say, just upload one with five or six photos.

As far as the page you uploaded, what I see are a lot of extra table cells.
Fusion uses tables for positioning, but there are ways to keep the number of
tables down. A good way to see the structure visually is to use Firefox's
Developer Toolbar, which is available for free here:
    http://chrispederick.com/work/webdeveloper/

I'm attaching a screenshot of your page with the table cells outlined.

I also was curious to know if you're using CSS (you are) and the dynamic
html setting, so those are both good starts. Much of what you did with your
original site using frames you can do far more easily with Fusion's master
borders, but I'd seriously look at using an external photo gallery myself.
Nevertheless, upload one so we can all take a look.

Good grief. Please don't place 1500+ photos into one nod file. NOF gallery
databases should be kept to just a few per nod file. I don't use more than
20-30 photos per gallery. 60 would be pushing the NOF limits. Perhaps you
should look at jalbum which Lucian highly recommends. But even Jalbum has
    limits, too.

Thanks. I uploaded some pages to
    http://www.chippeweb.com/newsite/index.html
and this is basically what I want to do, with more personal pages, a guest
book, and A LOT more photos. This is the same basic design I was using. I
like this style. I created 4 galleries with about 20 or so photos each. All
    this worked fine.

I appreciate all the help. Thank you.

Incidentally, that site, I created about 7 years go with FP98.

    Anthony.

    | Hi, Anthony,
    |
    | Well, I mentioned frames because your FrontPage site has them and I've
    found
    | that new Fusion users are often confused about master borders.
    |
    | If you upload a few pages, just put five or six images on them. They'll
    be
    | enough for us to get an idea what's going on.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already resized and optimized the images.
The total size for ALL of the photos I have so far is only 67.5 MEGAbytes. I
have a total of 1,518 photos, which I had hoped to spread across the 25
galleries. Most are sized to approx 320 pixels wide, and a few are 640
pixels. Most files are less than 40K each.

If you look at the galleries I created on my old website www.chippeweb.com,
these are all the same photos I was trying to add to gallery pages in
    Fusion.

    | Hi Anthony,
    | Welcome to the NOF newsgroup. I agree with Chuck and Lucian but would
    also
    | add this:
    |
    | Optimize those family photos in Photoshop or some other photo editing
    | program BEFORE inserting images into NOF. No web design program can
    handle
    | huge (5-8 megapixel) image libraries. Full size Photo Gallery images
    should
    | be compressed into 30-50 kb jpgs before you bring them into NOF, otherwise
    | you are inviting disaster.
    |
    | Best of luck on your project,

I wasn't using frames - I added a few items to the MasterBorder , and even
made a copy of the MasterBorder so I can change some objects on certain

I am going to rebuild a few of the pages and post them so I can show you

    | Something else just occurred to me since you're new to Fusion, Anthony.
    |
    | A lot of new Fusion users confuse frames with Master Borders.
    |
    | You can have
    | * frames without master borders
    | * master borders without frames, and
    | * master borders which are frames.
    |
    | Additionally, the term 'master border' is a bit confusing.
    |
    | The name would seem to imply that a 'master border' has to go all the way
    | through a site. But, in fact, a site can have as many 'master borders' as
    a
    | designer wants - e.g., a 'master border' for 'Work', a 'master border' for
    | 'My New House', a 'master border' for 'Friends', one for 'Family' etc.
    You
    | can put match any master border to any page and change it at any time.
    |
    | Think of 'master borders' as 'repeated elements' - which, in Fusion's
    case,
    | work on the four borders of a page, if you want, though you can have just
    | one side of a page be a master border.

    Default master borders

Something else just occurred to me since you're new to Fusion, Anthony.

A lot of new Fusion users confuse frames with Master Borders.

    You can have
    * frames without master borders
    * master borders without frames, and
    * master borders which are frames.

Additionally, the term 'master border' is a bit confusing.

The name would seem to imply that a 'master border' has to go all the way
through a site. But, in fact, a site can have as many 'master borders' as a
designer wants - e.g., a 'master border' for 'Work', a 'master border' for
'My New House', a 'master border' for 'Friends', one for 'Family' etc. You
can put match any master border to any page and change it at any time.

Think of 'master borders' as 'repeated elements' - which, in Fusion's case,
work on the four borders of a page, if you want, though you can have just
one side of a page be a master border.

    Hi Anthony,
Welcome to the NOF newsgroup. I agree with Chuck and Lucian but would also
    add this:

Optimize those family photos in Photoshop or some other photo editing
program BEFORE inserting images into NOF. No web design program can handle
huge (5-8 megapixel) image libraries. Full size Photo Gallery images should
be compressed into 30-50 kb jpgs before you bring them into NOF, otherwise
    you are inviting disaster.

Best of luck on your project,

    Hi, Anthony,

Well, I mentioned frames because your FrontPage site has them and I've found
that new Fusion users are often confused about master borders.

If you upload a few pages, just put five or six images on them. They'll be
enough for us to get an idea what's going on.
