Guest book spam issues
I have a guest book (NOF9) which I have configured to require validation
prior to visible acceptance on the guest book entries page, however I am
currently getting spamed out, is there a way of blocking these infestations
or is it a case of dont have a guest book or live with it, any insite would
be appreciated.

Re: Guest book spam issues
Thanks for that, a realy interesting twist, shows how easy it is for anyone
so inclined to mess up everybody elses life. I also have been looking at
this and I am currently reading a tutorial on
http://www.devshed.com/c/a/PHP/Security-Images-in-PHP which uses a picture
to fool the spamers, working on a client artical at the moment so will get
back to it later, in the meantime I am just deleting the files upon the
server as I can delete all of them at one go.
Mike C (Thanks again for the info)

Re: Guest book spam issues
Haven't seen one yet. We took it off the site for that very reason.

Re: Guest book spam issues
Your post intrigued me, and although I don't use a guestbook, I decided to see
what email harvesters can do. I downloaded a program and ran it on my site,
where it not only picked up our company email address from the site, but went
to all sites that were linked (probably only about 15) and gave me all emails
that were on those sites, the links from those sites to others that were linked
to them, and the emails on those, etc.
It probably would have run all night. When I shut it down it has searched
around 1800 websites and given me over 1000 email addresses.
While it was running, I was looking at a University site where I teach off and
on, and discovered their directory of email addresses with a lookup. Putting a
"*" in the lookup gave me 1400 email addresses. Not that I have any uses for
them, but I learned that it is so easy to get email addresses without really
trying.

Hi,
we have modified file
gb_add_post.php
for guestbook 2.0 so that spam is not going threw anymore (you also do not need any "captcha code" anymore). All you need is to download your version (for 9, 10 or 11) from my (German) site
http://www.tommyherrmanndesign.com/n...buch-spam.html
and place it in your folder on your server:
scripts
than also copy the other 2 files to that very same folder "scripts"
phrase-list.txt (contains over 800 blocked words - you may add any words you like)
url-domain-bl.txt (contains over 34,000 blocked URL's - you may add any URL's you like)
You have the option to create two new pages which will appear after a success entry or a denied entry. They must be named (if you decide to do so):
gb_ok (for success)
gb_banned (denied)
Since I am using this I had no spam at all anymore in my guestbook.
