site template 52Mb yet total of page templates 12Mb..help !
Hi,
I opened my NoF8 site in NoF9, it suggested a copy file to continue with, I
agree to this and it makes it.
It has 16 pages, 3 of which are galleries.
I have exported each page as a template, just to see if each page is ok, as
I was getting missing assets message when doing entire site firstly in NoF8
then now in NoF9, had hoped NoF9 would oversome that.
I get 16 zip files, they total 12.1Mb
I found the missing assets files existing in NoF9, they simply were not
there in NoF8, I never deleted them , never knew of them, open one up and
cant see what use it is, anyhow feed them into the folder its looking in, a
NoF8 folder, even had to make that as it didnt exist, and hey presto
template exports..thats that sorted :-)
I now am able to export the 'Entire Site' to send to someone, it creates a
52.7Mb zip file...strewth !
I am unable to email it and as we will be batting the template to and fro,
this is prohibitive, email limit is 30Mb !!!
Surely I dont have images giving that much...
Assets folder for the NoF9 saved file sees original images in it and a
folder called db. Dont know purpose of that db folder but it has the
original images again but multiplied up, e.g.
copied from it are these names as an example:-
db_048_-_abp_aboutUs.jpg
db_048_-_abp_aboutUs1.jpg
db_048_-_abp_aboutUs2.jpg
db_048_-_abp_aboutUs3.jpg
db_048_-_abp_aboutUs4.jpg
db_048_-_abp_aboutUs5.jpg
The original images in the assets folder (outside of the db folder) total
1.8Mb.
Contents of the db folder total 8.63Mb
Right click>properties for Assets folder tells me total size of files within
it and the db folder = 11.7Mb
Why the 52Mb file for entire site ?
I tried optimizing the site but that only lessened it a fraction, became
52.4Mb !
DESPERATE FOR HELP ????!!!!
Steve.

Re: site template 52Mb yet total of page templates 12Mb..help !
Have you perhaps still got old, unused galleries in the site? Have a look
under assets/data objects to see if there are old galleries there you can
delete.
I don't know whether the 'Copy to assets folder' option applies in 8 to
photo gallery pictures? I know they don't appear under file assets as normal
(only as data objects) but I always have the copy assets function turned
off.
Also, it might be better to open the original site in 8, re-optimize it,
then delete unused assets. (All your old pics and files are there until you
remove them)
Then export the complete site as a template, which you can open in 8,9 or 10

Re: site template 52Mb yet total of page templates 12Mb..help !
Thanks for the tips,..things just got interesting....I opened the 52Mb zip
and looked to see what was in it, in there are 24Mb tif files ...Path column
has Assets/Eventdate though I can find no address on my pc of that address.
Now that file does not exist on my pc except in a folder nothing to do with
NoF8 or 9, I would have opened that tif file, as I did, save a copy as 72dpi
low res jpg and saved that jpg to the folder of images ready to start
creating my website.
Somehow the export entire site as template function, unlike the create
template of gallery page function, has considered where the jpg in the
gallery and in the assets folder and in the folder called images for website
started life from, and gone off and grabbed that as well. !!!!! I
stress...that tiff file was never used in the gallery, for starters its a
tif file, I know they are massive ! All gallery images were premade to a
standard height anyway then used. I was so methodical, yet this program has
a mind of its own !
I now need to consider how I stop it doing this. Any ideas ?...this is the
crux of the problem.
Its not possible to open the NoF8 file and optimise it as I have done too
much work now in NoF9.
I cannot see where to turn off Copy to assets function, if thats the secret
?

Re: site template 52Mb yet total of page templates 12Mb..help !
The 'Copy assets...' function in 9 and 10 appears as a check-box when you go
to insert a graphic in a page - I'm not sure if it's relevant for the photo
galleries though, as I haven't tried that.
If you have lots of unused files appearing, try the Re-optimize function on
the 'Tools' menu on the Site page.
After that, go to Assets, then from the 'Assets' menu choose Delete all
unused file assets'.
Click on Data Objects, and check for unused photo galleries - if any there,
right-click and delete them. (Just make sure they're unused!)
See if that sorts out all the unwanted files.

Wonderful, never realised but data Objects showed two galleries I had
deleted, yet stil existing, in the 'ether', and the silly prog was zipping
them into my template. How become if you make a page, add a gellery, then
scrub the idea, delete the gallery, perhaps the page, it still retains the
gallery there on that dataobjects. ?
export now a healthy 4Mb not 52Mb !

Re: site template 52Mb yet total of page templates 12Mb..help !
I'm glad that helped.
NOF hangs on to everything you've ever used until you delete it from the
Assets folder - including complete galleries!
I only found out about the galleries being stored when I reorganised a
football league site a couple of years ago (loads of team/match photos) and,
like you, couldn't understand why a saved site template was so massive!
