Usenet was always, IMHO, the best discussion technology as it was
always fast, allowed you to access a large number of groups without
using different urls and also, in general, was bit of a wild west show
(at least, the best {unmoderated} ones were. Usenet came out about 1987
but there are precious few instances of it nowdays - a great technology
was all but killed off by spammers. There's a special place in hell
    reserved for them.

But hey - that's progress, right?

Seconded - so much easier to grab the updated posts,
(all nicely threaded via my newsreader - Thunderbird)
rather than ploughing through a web-based forum.....

Dropping the News would be a backward step IMHO

I'll use the forum for awhile and see how it goes ... use a number of others for program / web design support so it's easy to fit in for me
    It's not a bug...just an undocumented feature

Just like with anything new, there will be some teething issues until it gets rolling. Once that happens there should not be any surprises. The forums will be available directly from within the software so it will be a lot quicker when you need to get here.

Once a new user to the forums gets past the set number of posts they automatically become unmoderated full members and no restrictions apply. So if you want to speed up the process use the forum a lot now so that your membership gets qualified and the new post moderation goes away.

After a user becomes a full member moderation should only be used to keep the spam bots away. Most people who participate in the NetO groups are polite and I am sure that will transfer into the online forums.

I will monitor both the nntp groups and the forum for a few weeks then probably drop nntp. I will be dropping my nntp mirror and web based interface to nntp after this online forum gets a foot hold.

I always thought using newsgroups was a little passe, and wondered why there
wasn't a forum. But I do see how fast the newsgroup is. I think the "Today's
Posts" function will help to quickly see what's new.

Here's my question though: As folks register on the forum, is there a way to
have their Forum ID matched to previous posts on the Newsgroup?

I'm not thinking in terms of bypassing the moderated posting period, but for
times when you want to find posts by a specific user. If I recall that
"turtle" had some things to say about an issue, but on the forum he's now
"lizard", I may not find the post I'm looking for.

I was a click away from setting up a UserID on the forum when this occurred
to me. Is this possible? Anything to consider when registering that would
    help that happen?

I'm happy to work with either the newsgroup or the forum but I do prefer the newsgroup as it's more convenient for me. I would imagine that the newsgroup will be taken off-line after a few weeks/months so I guess we'd better get used to the forum.

Give it a couple of weeks and then any glitches will have been ironed out.

I'm not convinced I have everything set up correctly in my profile so I will continue to tweak, post by post. I wonder if my signature will actually display now?

Couple quick comments about the new forums and existing newsgroups (NNTP).
    1. We are going to maintain the existing newsgroups
    2. Posts are moderated on the forums *only* to deal with spam. Newsgroup remain un-moderated, as the existing user base there has grown accustomed to it. Once a registered user has made 2 approved posts they will automatically un-moderated from that point on. Providing they follow the rules of the road
    3. We understand the moderation is an inconvenience, but we will work hard to be quick about moderating posts and add staff if necessary.
    4. There is bi-directional syncing between the forums and newsgroups, every (1) minute. We understand some people have their preferences, and we don't want to encumber them.
    5. Fusion Support agents will have an active presence in the forums (primarily Fusion 11)
    6. We do have the archival newsgroups and plan to bring those online, however no ETA just yet
    7. We are soft launching these forums, so if any of the above processes don't work out expect them to change.

I was able to do a search in the forum software using your name and 71 posts came back. Not sure how many you have made via nntp as I have my local reader set to purge old topics so I cannot search back further than 30 days using my nntp reader. This forum should be able to search back to your first post as all content is cached within the forum and does not rely on a users local reader maintenance settings.
