Default How to build my software marketplace.

    Hi,

Well my question is not easy i guess. I hope to find some answers here.

My idea is to build a website that functions as a marketplace for software.
I'm talking about 3Dobjects that 3Dartists use in 3Denvironments to enhance
their scenes. Visitors can become a member and buy those 3Dobjects. After
payment via f.i. Paypal they can download the needed items. Members can also
sell objects they made theirselves. To do that they must be able to upload
objects to the site, along with previews of the objects, set a price they
want to receive. When an object is sold a percentage of the price is for the
owner of the market and a percentage will be payed to the artist that made
the object. My guess is that uploading, downloading and payments need to be
done automatically so business runs smooth and all members are happy.

That is my idea in short. Does anybody here have some advise in how to start
with a project like this? A plan/model in organising this.

To get the idea of what I mean I can show you the example of another famous
    site that does this http://www.turbosquid.com/
It is not my idea to make it that large but it gives you an idea of what I
am looking for. I do not want to write articles. I do not want to start a
forum. My ideas are much more modest.

Thanks for any answers in advance

    Sjaak,

OK, I'll bite. I often go were others fear to tread.

NOF, as a tool, is more than capable of generating almost anything you can
dream up. Are there better tools for this kind of design....possibly, but I
think that's really a matter of personal preference.

I have no idea what level of talent or experience you have in the web design
arena, but I would have to assume from your request for advice that you
don't do this for a living.

This type of site offers a lot of challenges (both design and technical). My
advice is that if you want a truly professional web site, hire a
professional for a project that is this ambitious. I may be wrong, but I
seriously doubt if too many designers would be willing to offer up a free
blueprint for this project. It's not that web design is all that difficult,
but like anything else, to do a good job you need talent, training,
experience, and good tools (of which NOF is one).

    Mmmmh,

Is it that hard to organise a website like that?

Is it Netobjects fusion that is not capable of building a website with my

    Very easy.

The site you reference was written in coldfusion.

    All you need is:

    1) a host that supports coldfusion
    2) an industrial strength database such as MS sql server or MySQL
    3) a few hours of coding time to write the routines that run the database.

Once you have all of that together you can just pop your code into your Fusion site pages using ctrl+t and <cfinclude>

    As I said.... very easy

OR...... If you do not want to take the time to learn coldfusion and write the code blocks, you can always sub out the coldfusion coding and keep the ctrl+t insertions to do yourself.

Thanks Turtle and thanks Dave for responding.

Your guess was right Dave. I am not a proffessional websitedesigner. I am a
3dvisualiser and there is a need for a website like that because te big one
out there, Turbosquid, does not support much the software I use for my job.
There are a lot of other users lacking stuff they need. That brought me to
the idea of starting something for myself. I do know and use NOF since
version 6 so I consider myself a moderate user of NOF. Building a 'normal'
site is no problem for me. Building something like this is completely new.

I don't think learning Cold fushion is an option. I will try to dig into
this further. Any advice is still welcome.

    Hello Sjaak,
To get started with get a quick site to sell digital products (3D images or
PDF tutorials for example), you should look at www.payloadz.com

Customer pays with credit card or e-check through PayPal, then gets directed
to a download page to receive product(s). Simple to set up. Very
affordable. You can then build your NOF site in the usual way, with
external links to your Payloadz shopping cart.

    Hello Sjaak,

I hope i am not that late to the party to answer your question. But we did build a marketplace platform where you can aggregate independent producers and sell as a community or marketplace. Our transaction system replicates what you describe and we have many examples on our site for you to explore. One of the cool aspect is we built for digital market as well. So if you want to sell digital files, you can do so and the fulfillment is instantaneous.

Check out www.meylah.com and let me know if you are still looking for a solution to build your own marketplace in minutes.
